Monadnock at Home Helps Heather Age in Place – On Her Own Terms

Heather’s face sank. It was a moment she never thought would come.
But there she was: realizing she could no longer drive.
Her mind raced. Gone were the scenic rides through the Monadnock Region, the quick trips to the grocery store, and the ability to get to the increasing number of medical appointments.
But in Heather’s case, this moment didn’t mark the end of her independence. In fact, it opened the door to something new and exciting – Monadnock at Home.
There’s No Place She’d Rather Be
If you meet Heather, two words come to mind: kind and trustworthy.
She grew up in New Jersey, but New Hampshire has been home for more than 40 years. One visit to her sister’s house in Francestown was all it took – she fell in love with the Monadnock Region.
She built her life here, raised two children, and was a longtime early childhood teacher. Today, she treasures time with her four grandchildren who all live a short drive away.
But like many older adults, health challenges changed daily life. No longer able to drive, getting to the doctor’s office or grocery store became more difficult. Her children help when they can, but like many families, they work during the day.
Three Words Changed Everything
In what she calls a stroke of fate, she opened the local newspaper and saw three words that would soon change her life: Monadnock at Home. It was an ad for an upcoming information session.
Heather and her daughter attended to learn how the Catholic Charities NH program helps older adults shop for groceries, get to appointments, and stay connected – so they can keep living safely in their own homes.
“What stood out is how accommodating they are,” said Heather of Monadnock at Home.
Heather signed up – and soon began getting rides to the grocery store every other week, with volunteers who go beyond driving. During one recent visit, her volunteer noticed she was having trouble navigating her shopping cart. Without hesitation, he stepped in, guiding it while Heather picked out what she needed.
“The rides are empowering,” she shares. “The organization and its amazing volunteers have been more than friendly.”
It was a small moment, but one that meant everything to her.
Monadnock at Home also helped her find a trusted snow removal company through its network of pre-vetted service providers. Now, when it snows, Heather has peace of mind knowing her driveway and walkways will be taken care of.
“Monadnock at Home is so attentive to my needs,” Heather shares. “I’m not just a number – I’m a name.”
The social connection is huge for her too. Isolation can be a real issue for older adults living alone, with serious emotional and physical health risks. In fact, its health impact has been compared to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
But thanks to Monadnock at Home, Heather knows someone always has her back. She attends the program’s regular coffee groups, where she connects with others, shares stories, and builds friendships. She also joined a recent outing to a Vincent van Gogh film in Jaffrey.
“There are so many different types of people I would not have otherwise met,” she shares. “We get to share interesting life stories and perspectives.”
Heather also marvels at how staff goes above and beyond.
After she missed a Coffee Connection due to a brief hospitalization, staff noticed. They called. No answer. So they went to her home to check on her – and then connected with her family to make sure she was safe.
Still Independent. Still Herself
If it weren’t for Monadnock at Home, Heather knows life would be much different. But because of the support, she’s able to enjoy a high-quality life – exactly where she wants to be.
The impact extends to her family members too. They worry less, knowing she can get to her appointments, has access to food, and has people looking out for her.
“Monadnock at Home has saved my life in a way,” she shares. “They give me something to look forward to – connecting with others, getting to where I need to go, and knowing I am taken care of.”
Heather has a message for others facing similar challenges:
“It can be hard asking for help – but Monadnock at Home makes it easy.”
Then she adds something every donor should hear:
“Every gift to Monadnock at Home is well spent. It’s helping a fellow human being feel valued – with dignity and purpose.”
The final puzzle piece clicks into place.
It’s a quiet, rainy Tuesday in Peterborough. Heather pauses, then smiles as she looks down at her finished puzzle.
She heads to the kitchen to prepare lunch. Later, she’ll curl up under a blanket with a good book.
It’s a simple day. A peaceful day. Exactly the kind of day she loves – in the home she cherishes. There’s nowhere she’d rather be.
And because of Monadnock at Home, she’s able to keep living there.
