Addressing Social Isolation in New Hampshire

Here’s a question for you…

True or false: The health impact of social isolation can be comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day?

Answer: True, according to the U.S. Surgeon General.

It may sound surprising. But to us, it’s not entirely unexpected.

We’ve been addressing social isolation here at Catholic Charities NH for years. And there’s good reason: loneliness and social isolation are now considered a serious health concern.

Social isolation goes beyond simply feeling lonely. It can mean having few social connections or limited interaction with others. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, social isolation has been associated with a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke. Among older adults, social isolation has also been associated with a 50% increased risk of developing dementia.

A recent article shares a key message: Social isolation is a health issue, but it isn’t one healthcare can solve on its own. Communities, relationships and social networks all have an important role to play in keeping people connected.

That’s where Catholic Charities NH comes in.

Helping older adults stay connected isn’t just about companionship. It’s about supporting their health, well-being and independence – and addressing social isolation in New Hampshire one connection at a time.

Last year, our CareGivers program helped nearly 500 homebound seniors in the Manchester and Nashua areas with rides to medical appointments, grocery deliveries and emotional support. 97% of seniors said their quality of life improved because of the program.

Similarly, Monadnock at Home provided support to 114 older adults in the Monadnock Region, many of whom live alone or in rural communities. The program’s social gatherings and activities give members opportunities to regularly connect with others, forge new friendships and build a stronger sense of community.

With each ride, delivery and phone call comes something just as important: a friendly face, a voice on the other end – and the reminder that they aren’t alone.

Because of the support of people like you, many older adults have someone in their corner – and a connection they can count on.
